Winter  2023 CLASS REGISTRATION - Most Classes are Full

Please review the class descriptions and prerequisites below.  Click on the registration link to be taken to the registration page for that class.

Pet/Intro Obedience Classes

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy

Description: This is a basic socialization and early obedience class for puppies up to 12 months old. At the completion of the program, your puppy can earn an AKC S.T.A.R. puppy certificate. Skills such as sit, down, come, and controlled walking on a leash will be taught. Other puppy behaviors we practice are handling the puppy, socialization with other people and puppies etc. Puppies do not have to be registered with AKC nor do they need to be purebred. Beginner obedience, Canine Good Citizen preparation, Pre-Agility are all reasonable next steps following this S.T.A.R. Puppy class.

Beginner Obedience/Rally

Description: This is a basic class for handlers and dogs to learn skills needed for everyday life. Skills such as sit, down, come, and controlled walking on a leash will be covered. The class is intended for graduates of our STAR Puppy program or for adult dogs that are just getting started. This class prepares teams for many of our more advanced obedience classes. Recommended for dogs 7 months and older.

Beginner Obedience/Rally II

Description: This class is the next class for those who have completed the Beginner Obedience/Rally Class (Part I). We will focus on the skills needed for advancing to Beginner Obedience and Rally Classes. Skills covered will be beginning heeling with patterns for obedience and rally, sit and down stays, recalls fronts and finishes.
Prerequisite: Completion of Beginner Obedience/Rally or instructor approval

CGC Test Prep

Description: ​This class will teach you to train your dog for the 10 specific behaviors required by the AKC for the Canine Good Citizen certification.  Please note:  This is  for dogs with some previous obedience training.  Your dog should be able to walk alongside you on leash, know some basic commands such as sit, down, stay and come.  We'll help you with the rest.

Controlled Walking

Description: Does your dog drag you on a walk, pull you through doorways, lunge at other animals, jerk you off your feet?  Three 30 minute sessions will teach how to take back control on your walk.  6 teams only.  This class is 30 minutes long and lasts 3 weeks.

Improving Your Recall

Description: Does your dog come every time you call?  If he/she doesn't, do you know what to do?  This class will show you how to follow through should your dog "ignore" your come command.  Dogs taking this class should already have a reward based recall.  We will challenge their understanding of coming when called.  This class is 30 minutes long and lasts 3 weeks.

Competition Obedience Classes

Rally Novice

Description: This class is for students who have basic obedience exercises such as sit, heel, front, finish right and left.  Rally AKC rules and regulations will be introduced.  One Novice Rally course will be set up each week along with an exercise practice ring.  Students will receive practice and coaching in reading signs and running courses.  We'll cover everything you need to enter your first AKC Rally Competition.

Rally Advanced/Excellent

Description: This class is designed to provide experience in running Excellent and Master Rally courses. The class will have two rings – one with an Excellent course and one with a Master course. Students will receive practice opportunities and coaching in reading and executing the exercises as they run the courses. The participants should have completed at least 2 Rally Advanced legs or have permission of the instructor.

Competition Obedience Foundation

Description: Are you interested in getting your dog started in competition obedience? I want everyone to experience the joy that is a dog choosing to play the game of obedience with you.  In this class you and your dog will work on building a strong foundation in heeling through pivots, and your dog will learn to focus on you in a variety of fun games. We will use platforms to help your dog learn about fronts, finishes, and changes of position. If your heeling is holding you back, this class is perfect for helping you help your dog learn to love heeling. Prerequisite: Dog must be able to eat treats and/or play with toys on leash in proximity to other leashed dogs. No prior experience necessary for dog or handler!

Competition Beginner Novice

Description: This class prepares handler/dog teams to compete for the Beginner Novice Title (BN). The required exercises consist of Heeling on Leash while following signs, Figure Eight, Sit for Exam, Sit- Stay walk around the ring, and Recall.  Prerequisites: Dogs must be able to heel on leash, sit, stay, and recall, or instructor’s approval.

Competition Novice

Description: This class prepares hander/dog teams to compete for the Novice Title (CD). The required exercises consist of Heeling on Leash and Figure Eight, Stand for Exam, Heel Free, Recall, Sit Stay-Get Your Leash, and Group Exercise (Sit and Down). Prerequisites: Completion of the BN Title, or dogs must be able to heel on and off leash, sit, stay, recall, control dog off leash, or instructor’s approval.

Open Obedience

Description: For those teams that are presently competing in Open Obedience, have completed their Novice title, or are successfully competing in Novice Obedience. All teams should have foundation skills for Open. If they do not have foundation skills.  Additional classes needed: Novice Prep &/or Ring Ready Prep or instructor approval.. Students must have Novice Obedience title. This class will only be 3 evenings.

Open/Utility Games

Description: The upper levels of obedience are equal parts challenging and enjoyable for both dog and handler! In this class we will break down the Open and Utility exercises into pieces in an effort to make the training process as clear and enjoyable for the dogs as possible. We will introduce go outs, jumping and handling for directed jumping, retrieve over high, and broad jump, position changes for signals and command discrimination, shaping a retrieve and hold, and the pieces of the dumbbell, article, and glove retrieves. As the dogs progress and become competent in the individual components of the exercises, we will begin to chain these pieces together. 

​Prerequisites: Dog must be able to do pivots and have a foundation of heeling, dog must be controlled and safe in proximity to other dogs off leash

Intro to Utility

Description: For those teams that are competing in Open or who have completed their CDX title.  If you have questions on the appropriateness of this class, please feel free to call the instructor @ 704-724-7802. This class will only be 3 evenings.

Agility Classes

Pre-Agility

Description: This class will cover introduction to clicker training, targeting, "baby" obstacle familiarization, focus, on and off switches, and groundwork. Dogs should know sit and down-stay for at least 10 seconds and come when called. This class is held indoors.

Beginner Agility

Description: Whether it’s just-for-fun or with the goal of competing, the foundation is the same.  Instruction is tailored to each team’s level.  Dogs will work one at a time in the fenced outdoor field on competition agility equipment.  Teams will learn to safely perform all individual obstacles, then short sequences, then longer sequences.  New handlers will learn basic handling concepts and the advantages of different contact criteria.  Prerequisite skills:  stay and come when called.

Competition Agility

Description: This class is open to any teams that are currently competing in agility trials. All will course build and will run a different course each week. There will be discussion on the most effective way to run the course based on your dog and your skill level.

Scentwork Classes

Scentwork 1.5 - Building on Scentwork Foundations

Description: This class is a continuation of Foundations of Scent Work. Focus will be a continuation of foundation skills such as odor obedience, indication, and handling.
Prerequisite: SW1 or equivalent with prior instructor approval. Priority will be given to dogs who have not taken the class before. A handler may only sign up for one spot with one dog.

Scentwork 2.5 - Building on Scentwork Elements

Description: This class is for students who have completed SW2 and are ready to move on to multiple hides within an element search. Dogs MUST be on birch odor and while being on Anise is not required, it is helpful. Dogs will be introduced to the search elements in AKC Scent Work - interiors, exteriors, buried and containers. Students should be working towards Advanced Scent Work trial level. 
Prerequisite: Completion of SW2 or prior instructor approval. Priority will be given to dogs who have not taken the class before. A handler may only sign up for one spot with one dog.

Scentwork Advanced Run Thrus

Description: This class is for students who are currently competing in Advanced or higher level AKC Scent Work or similar level in another venue. Dogs must be on birch and anise odors. We will also include clove in some searches. Class will consist of run-thru set ups, with multiple search areas, scent puzzles and challenges.  Prerequisite: SW2, trialing at or titled at the Advanced level, or prior instructor approval.

Open Ring for Club Members

Description:  This "class" is for CDTC members who want to practice with their dogs in a ring.  No instructor is present and other members may also be signed up for use of that ring at the same time. Registration is required and it is the responsibility of the members signed up to work out a rotation to allow everyone to use the ring. This is not open to non-club members.
